PURELY PLANT BASED WALL ART

THE JAL HANDMADE TAPESTRY

JIWYA converted the original painting by Joshua and Trey at ELW into an appliqued handmade tapestry that involves our purely plant based fabrics, colors and our commitment to using only authentic, handmade Indian textile arts.

Jal in Hindi, Bengali and many Indian languages means Water. This particular piece is backed with a Dabu Hand-Block printed fabric from Rajasthan and sturdy cotton canvas to support the tapestry’s shape. The turtle uses handloom fabric made in khadi and locally sourced cotton from three different states- Tamil Nadu, Assam and Odisha. The Jellyfish encompasses natural indigo dyed handloom from Andhra Pradesh and the Octopus used textile art forms of Bagh Hand-Block Print from Madhya Pradesh, Ikat from Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, and handloom from Bihar.

Our team then added beautiful touches of hand-embroidery around the shapes to translate the painting in the best way possible.

Natural aged indigo, myrobalan, madder, alum, rusted iron scrap dipped in jaggery and tamarind seeds paste, turmeric, Palaash flowers and such natural materials were used to complete the natural colors on this piece.

Art: Handmade Textiles Arts of Ikat, Sungudi, Handloom, Dabu and Bagru Hand-Block Prints, and Bagh Hand-Block Prints respectively from Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh.

Time Spent To Curate: 40-50 days
